Iloilo Science and Technology University in collaboration with  Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC) played host to the 15th Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities of Industrial Technology (PACUIT), Inc. National Conference held on May 3-5, 2017 at the Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iloilo City.

With the theme ”Technology Innovation for Sustainable Development Through Global Partnership,” the conference aimed to update the participants of  the current trends on technology innovation for sustainable development through presentation and discussion of topics, researches and studies related to the theme. It also aimed to promote collaborative research, sharing of experience, and knowledge and expertise among educators of industrial technology and provide a venue for members of PACUIT to present their research outputs and effective practices for sustainable development.

ISAT U President Raul F. Muyong and City Administrator  Atty. Hernanado C. Galvez, representing Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog,  welcomed the participants to the conference.

Dr. Ram Hari Lamichhane, Director General, Colombo Plan Staff College,  was the  keynote speaker of the conference.  He focused on the global trend of the workforce, green economy and sustainable development, role of technical education for sustainable development, issues and challenges of sustainable technical education and transforming technical education for sustainable future in message.

PACUIT members listen attentively during the plenary sessions.

Dr. Lamichhane highlighted the partnership for sustainable development and global competitiveness to ensure stable economy and and technological innovation as a must for sustainable development. The role of technical education for sustainable development to mitigate impact of human activity as well as to address ecological crisis were also emphasized. He encouraged higher learning institutions to (1) promote green campus in energy, water utilization and waste management; (2) promote green society by using renewable energy, proper waste management, clean water, forest management and facilitate transfer of green technology; (3) conduct green research and awareness program; and (4) create a green culture with green values, green attitude, green ethics and green practices.

Five topics were also presented in the plenary sessions: (1) ICT for Enhancing the Quality and Accessibility of Industrial Technology Education presented by Prof. Dr. G. Kulanthiavel, CPSC Faculty Consultant; (2) Curriculum Greening in Industrial technology by Dr. Renato M. Sorolla, Pres., Carlos Hilado Memorial State College ;(3) Technology and Patent Search: Method for Technological Innovation by ISAT U VP for Extension and Research Dr. Carmelo V. Ambut; (4) “Technopreneurship as a Catalyst for Industrial Technology Education Reform” by Dr. Godelyn G. Hisole, ISAT U professor and (5) Solar Power Plant Optimization through Automation by Hytech Power, Inc. President Engr. Jude S. Soliman.

Fifty-nine  researches/studies were presented in the parallel sessions by different members of PACUIT during the three-day conference.

A  cultural and  industrial tour  of the participants  around Iloilo City capped the event.

A total of 68 faculty and staff from Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) Miagao and Iloilo City Campuses  attended the International  Seminar  on ASEAN Community Collaboration Toward Quality Assurance and Capability Building on April 17-21, 2017 at Panyapiwat Institute of Management, Nonthaburi, Thailand.

A series of lectures and presentations were conducted by participants from ISAT U, St. Theresa International College (STIC) and Panyapiwat Institute of Management (PIM).

Dr. Yongyut Khamkhong, Asst. Dean, Humanities and Social Sciences (STIC) lectured on the topic “Higher Education in Thailand: Toward Enhancing ASEAN Community Collaboration in the Millenium.” The “Quality Assurance in the Philippine Higher Education,” on the other hand was presented by Mrs. Sandra T. Examen, ISAT U Miag-ao Administrator.

The “Technology of Productivity Improvement (Hotel and Restaurant Management)” was discussed by Prof. Nick Alfred T. Umadhay (PIM) while Mr. Weera Bumrungsee, Board of Director, Association of Thailand Travel Agents, gave the overview of “Tourism in Thailand, Biodiversity and Environment Ethics”.

After the presentations, ISAT U participants and 48 other foreign delegates gathered for a capability building activities. They were also treated with a tour  to historical and tourist spots of Thailand.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was entered into by Iloilo Science and Technology University and St. Theresa International College (STIC) on April 18, 2017 at Ongkharak, Nakhon Nayok, Thailand.

The two institutions agreed for  three years  to take necessary steps to encourage and promote co-operation in reciprocal visits by faculty members and or staff and students exchange; collaboration on academic development related to TVET; collaboration in organizing seminar and intellectual discourse and collaboration on mutual publication.

St. Theresa International College (STIC) was established in 2001  as an international college of higher education and is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of Thailand.  STIC is committed to continually develop the quality of its program through international collaboration.

The university Human Resource Management Office conducted a two-day interpersonal competence training to 100  regular and contractual front line administrative employees across the ISAT U System on April 19-20, 2017 at the Ed Tech Center.

A customer service centered activity and with the theme “Interpersonal Competence: A Key for Service Excellence,” the training was divided into four areas: customer service, computer literacy enhancement, records and files management and work values.

Wearing of proper office attire and personality development are part of the interpersonal competence workshop.

The  customer service and customer service skills were introduced to the participants by Dr. Rubie C. Lencioco. A lecture and workshop on customer service communication skills was given by Mrs. Jiesa J. Napone while Mrs. Hilda D. Darroca demonstrated basic customer service and personality development.

Mr. Lovendrick Jhon P. Barrios and Mr. Arnel N. Secondes enhanced the employees’ computer literacy with application of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Ms. Alma C. Espora discussed Republic Act  19470 or the National Archives Law for the records and files management and Dr. Muriel M. Jover gave a very fruitful orientation on the employees work values.

Iloilo Science and Technology University, Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities of Industrial Technology (PACUIT, Inc.)-ISAT U Chapter and the Council of Engineering and Architecture Schools in Western Visayas (CEAS-WV), Inc. conducted a Technopreneurship Training Workshop and Education on March 14-15, 2017 at the EdTech Center.

The workshop was conducted to advance entrepreneurial mindset and build entrepreneurial ecosystem among academic institutions in preparation for the offering of the Technopreneurship 101 course work across engineering curricula by year 2018, to train faculty and students to understand the concepts of entrepreneurship as applied in the engineering curriculum, train faculty how to incorporate entrepreneurship in their subject matter and train faculty to develop start-up venture.

Engineering faculty in different schools in  Western Visayas, faculty of ISAT U College of Industrial Technology, College of Arts and Sciences and College of Education, and selected Electronics Engineering and Electrical Engineering students were oriented on the topics on opportunity recognition and ideation; design thinking; team formation and team building; customer-centered product design; building entrepreneurial mindset in school; bookkeeping techniques; and elevator pitch.

Prof. Matthew George O. Escobido, Head, Innovation and Analytics Laboratories, Asian Institute of Management, Makati City, discussed on the “Design Thinking Customer-Centered Product Design.” The topic on “Opportunity Recognition and Ideation Building Entrepreneurial Mindset in School” was explained by Dr. Godelyn G. Hisole, CEA faculty and PACUIT ISAT U Chapter head.

Ms. Maila S. Alparaque, HRMO I, gave the insights on Bookkeeping Techniques while the Team Formation and Team Building was elucidated by Prof. Emily de la Cruz, GAD Chair.

Engr. Bernie Cangrejo, Head, Packaging Engineering Department, Central Philippine University,  enhanced the participants’ communication skills through the Elevator Pitch and Mr. Emil Benjamin B. Tapnio, Program Director – IDEA, Philippine S & T Development Foundation – Manila, Inc. (PhilDev S & T), talked on the Role of PhilDev S & T in forging Technopreneurship 101.

Engr. Danny C. Molina, President, Council of Engineering and Architecture Schools, WV, Inc. encouraged students to be an entrepreneur and emphasized the value entrepreneurship as the driving force of the country.

The students from ISAT U CEA showcased their innovative projects that promote not only engineering but also lead to future entrepreneurial endeavor. Featured were the mechanical charger, water bed-water indicator, environmental lamp, drum seeder, heating chair, light with SMS-generated switched, multi-purpose box with lights, fan, clock, environmental floral lamps.
