ISAT U Archi Dept Strengthens Int’l Ties Through Benchmarking Visit to Malaysia

The Architecture Department of Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) successfully conducted a benchmarking visit to the University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Department of Architecture and Sustainable Design (DASD) at the Sungai Long Campus in Selangor, Malaysia on May 29, 2026.

The primary objective of the visit was to establish institutional connections and explore opportunities for academic collaboration and exchange between ISAT U and UTAR. The delegation, composed of BS Architecture 4-A and 4-B students together with faculty members Ar. Ma. Regina Falconite, Ar. Myren C. Dorado, and Ar. John Zeus Rosalin, was warmly welcomed by key officials of UTAR’s Sungai Long Campus.

UTAR’s DASD is fully accredited by the Board of Architects Malaysia and is recognized for its innovative approach to architectural education. Moving beyond purely theoretical instruction, DASD immerses students in a vibrant studio culture that emphasizes ecological resilience, climate-responsive design, and cultural context.

A highlight of the benchmarking visit was UTAR’s distinctive 3+2 curriculum structure, which has been in place since the department’s inception. This model provides valuable insights into program design, delivery, and progression, serving as a reference point for ISAT U’s own academic development.

UTAR also offers an international student exchange program lasting three months during its second semester, which conveniently aligns with the Philippine academic calendar. Given UTAR’s three-semester academic system, this arrangement presents a flexible and strategic opportunity for student mobility and collaboration.

Through this benchmarking initiative, ISAT U aims to broaden its academic horizons, strengthen its global partnerships, and provide its students with enriched learning experiences that prepare them for the challenges of sustainable and culturally responsive architectural practice.

ISAT U Students Honored in The Outstanding Students of Iloilo Awards (TOSIA)

The Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) proudly celebrates the recognition of two of its students as part of Iloilo’s most accomplished youth leaders in The Outstanding Students of Iloilo Awards (TOSIA) 2026.

Milagros Therese Tutanes, a fifth-year BS Architecture student, and Cheyenne Margarette Jacomille, a junior high school student from the ISAT U Laboratory School, were named among the 24 awardees who exemplify excellence beyond the classroom and embody civic engagement and social responsibility.

Tutanes was recognized for her groundbreaking initiative, Project Sikulo, which bridges architectural research with youth-led community advocacy. The project transforms Iloilo City’s landfill and shell waste into sustainable building resources through upcycling policies and local processing facilities. By promoting a circular economy, Project Sikulo empowers communities to co-create ecological solutions and cultivate long-term environmental stewardship.

Jacomille earned distinction for her project, ABARKADA: Bayanihan Para sa Balik-Eskwela, which supports SPED learners returning to school. Through inclusive and joyful activities such as dance, magic, and origami, alongside the distribution of essential school supplies, the initiative fosters empathy, inclusion, and shared responsibility while empowering learners to express themselves with confidence and joy.

The awardees, composed of 12 graduating college students and 12 junior high schoolstudents, were recognized by JCI Regatta and its partners during the awarding ceremony, “Salute to Excellence,” held on May 30, 2026, at Robinsons Place Pavia. The event was organized in partnership with the Department of Education’s Schools Divisions of Iloilo Province, Iloilo City, and Passi City.

ISAT U takes immense pride in Tutanes and Jacomille for their passion, creativity, and commitment to creating positive change. Their achievements highlight the university’s mission to nurture leaders who drive innovation, inclusion, and sustainable development in their communities.
